Martin Hermy has a PhD in ecological botany (Gent, 1985) on the effects of former land use on forest plant communities and their composition. He is a professor at the K.U.Leuven since 1994. Currently he is head of the division and involved as a promotor in 10 PhDs. Research on the impact of past and present land use changes and fragmentation on the dispersal (in both space and time) and recruitment of plant species in a context of biodiversity conservation has been the main research focus. He is also involved in the Belgian FORBIO tree diversity experiment.
