Stephan Hättenschwiler

I am interested in how organisms interact among each other and with environmental factors and how these interactions influence ecosystem processes. My work is mainly focussing on forest ecosystems covering a range of different biomes such as the alpine treeline, temperate deciduous, Mediterranean and tropical rainforests. My preferred approach is field experimentation spanning the fields of plant ecophysiology, trophic interactions, biogeochemistry and soil ecology. Current important topics of my research activities include the impact of atmospheric CO2 enrichment and biodiversity change on ecosystem functioning, with a specific interest on carbon and nutrient turnover during plant litter decomposition.
